    Nose Correction (Rhinoplasty)

The goal of a rhinoplasty is to achieve a more beautiful and proportional nose, all the while keeping its main breathing role intact, as well as preserving its internal structure.

WHAT IS THE RHINOPLASTY TECHNIQUE CALLED «MINI-INCISION»?

The « Mini-Incision » is a surgical approach practiced and taught by Dr Fanous.

It is composed of two key elements:

    a) the mini-incisions, meaning small incisions made inside the nose;
    b) the mini-dissection, meaning limited detachment of the internal nasal tissues.

During this nasal plastic surgery technique, the surgeon files down the bony excess and removes the extra-cartilage. Small scars are placed inside the nasal cavity. In the case where a reduction of the size of the nostrils is required, short scars are left at the base of the nostrils.

To raise part of the nose and improve its appearance, a cartilage (a graft from the nose or ears), a fascia (a soft tissue under the skin behind the ear) or synthetic implants (meshes, hard silicone, etc.) can be used.

    The surgery

    • WHAT IS THE DURATION OF A NOSE JOB?

The duration of a nose surgery performed by Dr. Fanous is generally an hour and a half.

This cosmetic surgery of the nose takes place in our certified and modern surgery clinic in Montreal.

    • IS IT PAINFUL?

In general, your rhinoplasty takes place without pain.

In general, you will have little discomfort during the postoperative period.

    • WILL I HAVE TO BE PUT TO SLEEP UNDER GENERAL ANESTHESIA?

No. Dr. Fanous uses local anesthesia with sedation.

This type of anesthesia is appreciated by our patients who undergo a rhinoplasty performed by Dr. Fanous at our surgery clinic in Montreal.

    • DOES RHINOPLASTY INVOLVE BREAKING MY NOSE?

During rhinoplasty, the surgeon rasps the extra bone and removes the excess cartilage. Sometimes, he may find it necessary to move the bone by practicing an osteotomy.

    • DOES THE SURGEON LEAVE COTTON PACKING INSIDE MY NOSE AT THE END OF MY RHINOPLASTY?

In general, no packing is used at the end of the rhinoplasty performed by Dr Fanous.

    After the surgery

    • WILL I HAVE A CAST OVER MY NOSE AFTER MY ESTHETIC NASAL SURGERY?

Your nose will be covered with a small pink plaster cast that will be removed without any pain one week after your surgery.

    • WILL I HAVE TO RETURN TO THE CLINIC TO GET MY STITCHES TAKEN OUT?

No. Dr. Fanous uses absorbable stitches that will disintegrate by themselves.

    • WILL I HAVE BRUISES, DISCOLORATION OR SWELLING AROUND MY EYES?

Generally, the swelling and bruises on the face are minimal to moderate.

    • WILL I HAVE VISIBLE SCARS ON MY NOSE?

During the rhinoplasty, Dr. Fanous places all the incisions inside the nasal cavity. In the case of wide nostrils, a short cut may be made at the base of each nostril. These scars are usually well hidden. In case of an “open” rhinoplasty, a small scar is placed between the two nostrils.

WHEN WILL I HAVE AN ACCEPTABLE APPEARANCE?

You will have an acceptable appearance within one to two weeks after your surgery.

Your nose will look better one week following your rhinoplasty, and then will continue to improve very gradually over a period of two to four years.

The end result is therefore not the one you see after the removal of your cast.

During the first few postoperative weeks, it is possible that you will feel numbness in your upper gums and minimal obstruction in your nose.

During the first few postoperative months, the swelling of your nose will diminish gradually. Do not worry about the slow evolution of your nose and the continuous changes in its appearance.

ARE THERE POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE COSMETIC SURGERY OF THE NOSE?

Although they are possible, the following complications are infrequent: large scars (keloids), infections, bleeding, sensation changes, skin necrosis, pain, lack of symmetry, etc.

I AM NOT SATISFIED WITH A PREVIOUS RHINOPLASTY ELSEWHERE. CAN YOU HELP ME? IS A REVISION RHINOPLASTY POSSIBLE?

Revision surgery is always possible, even after many previous nasal surgeries.

However, a revision rhinoplasty is more demanding on the technical aspect and requires experience from the nasal surgeon.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF NOSES THAT REQUIRE THE MOST EXPERIENCE FROM THE NASAL SURGEON?

    Crooked nose

A crooked nose is a delicate problem to correct because the nose is a cavity. The nasal structure risks becoming weak if its walls are moved too much to one side or the other.

    Thick skin

Thick skin makes a rhinoplasty more difficult because it is less able to contract after the removal of cartilage and bone. In this case, the nose may remain slightly larger than the ideal size.

    The best age

The best age for a rhinoplasty is between 20 and 30, but an experienced surgeon can deliver a satisfactory result on a patient aged 40 or over. Age also has a certain impact on the length of the recovery period following your plastic surgery of the nose.

    Nose tip

A nose tip that is too long or too prominent. In such a case, it is also possible to pull it backwards.
